Archbishop Spalding High School, a coeducational Catholic secondary school in Severn, MD is seeking a Director of Athletics for the 2021-2022 school year. Director of Athletics Job Description

The Director of Athletics is a year-round leadership position whose responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

Directs and Coordinates the Fiscal Operations within the Departments
  • Plans and prepares an annual proposed athletic budget.  Responsible for finances and accounting for all athletic funds
  • Arranges transportation for athletic contests 
  • Responsible for the ordering of all supplies, uniforms, and equipment for athletic programs; supervises the cleaning, storage, and care for all athletic equipment
  • Prepares and/or reviews various records and forms such as invoices, purchase orders, incident reports, budget information, job descriptions, athletic award plans, etc.
  • Coordinates outside use of facilities for Spalding Athletics, including Hockey rinks, swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts, etc. 

Creates the Schedules for All Operations and Activities within the Departments
  • Overseas safety guidelines for all athletes and coaches—ensuring compliance with MIAA/IAAM safety guidance—while consulting with athletic trainers to provide the best possible care and information for all athletes and parents
  • Ensures compliance for both physical and academic eligibility for athletic participation 
  • Hires officials, obtains security personnel as required, and assists with the proper supervision of home games. A member of the athletic department must supervise all home athletic contests 

Recommends, Manages, Supervises, and Evaluates Personnel
  • Recruits, screens, interviews and recommends prospective coaches
  • Supervises and evaluates coaching staff and other athletic personnel including the Athletic Training Department and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator
  • Provides professional training and mentoring for all coaches
  • Assists coaches in the handling of day-to-day problems
  • Resolves staff problems and provides support to coaches
  • Serves as a liaison between the coaching staff and the Admissions department for incoming freshmen and/or transfer recruits

Manages and Develops Facilities
  • Makes all necessary arrangements for the use of non-school playing fields and facilities
  • Arranges weekly practice schedules
  • Manages all facility rentals from outside organizations; handles contracts, securing of insurance and monitoring appropriate usage
  • Coordinates  with the Facilities Department regarding any necessary repairs or deliveries  

Public Relations: Establishes a Positive Image for the Athletic Department Within the School and the Community
  • Ensures that the sports program complies with the rules and regulations of the school, Archdiocese of Baltimore, MIAA and IAAM. Communicates to subordinate staff all policies, rules, procedures, and requirements as they pertain to the athletic department
  • Before the start of each athletic season, holds parent/coach meetings to set the standards for that season
  • Works closely with the Advancement Office to foster business partnerships in the community to maximize resources and support for all athletic programs

Miscellaneous
  • Attend all MIAA and IAAM League meetings 
  • Oversees the Athletic Summer Camp program
  • Performs other  duties as required

Job Requirements:
  • Minimum Bachelor Degree; Master’s preferred
  • Secondary school coaching experience required
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to facilitate conflict resolution
  • Personal commitment to Archbishop Spalding’s “One in Christ” school mission
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities 
  • Patience, stability, work ethic, and flexibility needed for the demands of the growing Athletic Department
