Sailing Moved to Varsity Athletics Status

Spalding Athletics Adds Sailing as 21st Varsity Sport

Severn, MD - Director of Athletics Jon Mellinger has announced the addition of sailing as the Cavaliers’ newest varsity sport. Spalding will begin sailing competition as a varsity sport immediately for the 2022 season.

‘Sailing has been a highly competitive program within the conference for a number of years, but it has always maintained ‘club status’ within our school. After extensive conversations with our club advisors and community partners, it only makes sense to move sailing from a club sport to varsity. We’re excited to welcome sailing into the Athletic Department.’

Sailing is a two season sport, taking place in the fall and spring. The varsity team will compete in the Maryland Interscholastic Sailing Association (MDISA) which includes local competitors in other varsity sports, St. Mary’s and Severn School.

Spalding Sailing has earned competitive finishes including a 3rd place finish at the National Invitational Tournament and a 4th place finish at the Phebe King Memorial Trophy Regatta

From Coach Ronnie Yates
"We are very excited to compete officially as a Spalding varsity sport and carry on Spalding's winning tradition on the water."
