Catherine Hellie has been named the 2020 Archdiocesan Teacher of the Year

Archbishop Spalding High School President Kathy Mahar is pleased to announce that Catherine Hellie,  Foreign Language Department Chair, has been named the 2020 Archdiocesan Teacher of the Year.  Chancellor of Education, Jim Sellinger and Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Donna Hargens, made the announcement and presentation on Wednesday, May 20th.  Teacher of the Year recipients were selected by the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Teacher of the Year Committee, which included Department of Catholic Schools staff and representatives from the Archdiocesan School Board.  The announcement was made during a virtual faculty and staff meeting and included a surprise socially distant in-person congratulations by Dr. Hargens.

Catherine Hellie has 19 years of teaching experience, and joined Archbishop Spalding in 2003.  She has served as the Foreign Language Department Chair for over fourteen years. She holds a Master’s degree in Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University.  President Kathy Mahar remembered that “Catherine was the first teacher I hired when I was appointed Principal in 2003.  A decision I have never regretted!”  Catherine Hellie embraces the mission of Spalding in every interaction that she has with students, colleagues, and parents.  She creates a caring environment that affirms the dignity of each student and promotes learning in engaging and innovative ways.  Join us in congratulating Catherine Hellie on this outstanding achievement.
