Athletic Training

Welcome from Athletics
Archbishop Spalding High School employs two full time athletic trainers to keep Spalding’s student-athletes safe, healthy, and performing at their best. Athletic trainers are certified and licensed health care professionals who work in the field of sports medicine and specialize in the management, prevention, and recovery of injuries and illnesses. You can find Spalding’s athletic trainers daily in the athletic training room after school for practices, and on the sidelines of all home games.

Athletic Training Policies:
Archbishop Spalding has access to an extensive network of quality sports medicine healthcare providers to refer to in a timely manner as needed. Dr. Jeffrey Mayer with MedStar Sports Medicine serves as Spalding’s team physician and works out of two convenient, local offices.
If an athlete sees an outside physician or goes to an urgent care/ER for any injury or illness, they must bring medical documentation to the athletic trainers to return to play. Documentation should include a diagnosis and specify whether there are any athletic restrictions or if the athlete is fully cleared to return. Spalding’s athletic trainers manage and supervise the return to play of all student-athletes after an injury/illness in collaboration with the treating healthcare providers. This process ensures Spalding’s athletes are fully recovered and able to return to play at their highest level.

Requirements for Athletic Participation:
Archbishop Spalding utilizes an electronic medical record system called Magnus Health. Any student who wishes to participate in athletics at Spalding must have the below information completed annually in their Magnus Health account by the start of their season:
1. Vital Health Record
2. Annual physical on Spalding’s form
3. Medication Authorization Form (if applicable)
4. Asthma, Allergy, Diabetes, Seizure plan (if applicable)

Freshman and transfer students must have this information completed by August 1st . Upperclassmen must have this information completed no later than the first day of tryouts

All forms must be uploaded directly to the Magnus Health Account - paper or emailed copies will not be accepted. Instructions on how to upload medical information to the Magnus Health Account can be found on this page in the red box titled “Physical & Magnus Instructions”. Physicals should be completed on the Spalding physical form which can be found on this page in the red box titled “Athletic Physical Form”.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns regarding sports medicine.
