2022-2023 Tryouts

Cheerleading tryouts for the 2022-2023 teams will be held in the Auxiliary Gym on the following days:

Friday, May 13th
5:00pm - 8:00pm
(tryout material instruction day: jump sequence, cheer, chant, and dance)

Saturday, May 14th
9:00am - noon (material review with stunt, tumbling, and large group evaluations)
1:00pm - 3:00pm (final evaluations - closed tryout: athletes will be assigned call back times for this session & will preform tryout cheer, chant, dance, and jump sequence in small groups.  Each athlete will have a 15 minute tryout block assigned to them on Friday evening.  Athletes will not need to be here for the entire 2 hour session but it is recommended that athletes are on campus at least 20 minutes prior to their assigned start time to stretch, review & mentally prepare)

To be eligible for a spot on our competitive cheerleading team, attending the May tryout is mandatory.  If you have conflicts with these dates but would like to be considered or the competition team, it is your responsibility to email Coach Miller at millerl@spaldinghs.org prior to May 13th for alternative tryout options.

Please arrive on time to each session, dressed and ready to begin.  You are ready when your hair is pulled back, jewelry is removed, and appropriate shoes are on your feet (cheer shoes or sneakers).
Dress comfortably in athletic attire, no jeans!!  Baggy/oversized attire is not recommended.
FOR SAFETY PURPOSES: FINGERSNAILS SHOULD BE TRIMMED & HAIR NEEDS TO BE SECURED TO REMAIN OFF ATHLETE'S SOULDERS.  To help determine the appropriate fingernail length, look at the palm side of your hand & no more than 1/8" of nail should be visible.  Deductions are issued for nails, hair, and jewelry infractions and will impact athletes ability to participate in stunts.

Stunt skills to be performed at tryouts include prep with pop dismount or twist dismount, extension with bump down dismount, and extended liberty with bump down dismount.  Athletes will start with prep/bump down dismount and cleared by coaching staff to progress to more difficult stunts as able.  Only athletes that successfully complete prep pop, extension bump down, and liberty bump down will be asked to show twisting dismount skills from prep and extended single leg body position variations.  Varsity level flyers are expected to have a twist dismount from prep and 3 advanced body positions in an extended single leg stunt.

Tumbling is not mandatory and athletes should only preform tumbling skills that they can complete successfully without a spot for evaluations.  Tumbling spots will only be given to athletes during designated tumbling warm-up times.
